The novel selected for One Book One Wagga 2020 was The Weekend by Charlotte Wood.
Three friends - women in their 70s - spend three days together over Christmas, de-cluttering the beach house of a fourth friend who has died. While sorting through possessions, the women have to deal with buried conflicts, secrets, and an ageing labradoodle.
More than 400 library members borrowed The Weekend, and more than 180 people viewed a free online streamed conversation (replacing the usual Gala Dinner due to the COVID-19 pandemic) between author Charlotte Wood and Interviewer Amy Heap, on Friday, May 29 at 7.30pm.
The Weekend went on to win Literary Fiction Book of the Year at the 2020 Australian Book Industry Literary Awards. It was also shortlisted for the 2020 Prime Minister's Literary Award for Fiction, the 2020 Australian Literature Society Gold Medal, the 2020 Indie Book Awards for Fiction, and the 2020 Stella Prize.
