Interpretation of the Design

My part of the artwork depicts the beauty of traditional Chinese culture. Harmony, balance, and wisdom are symbolized by the traditional Chinese building at the top of the flag. These are highlighted with bright red and gold coloured lanterns.

Chinese dumplings, or jiaozi, are symbols of tradition, family, and celebration. Dumplings are made with delicate wrappers and a variety of fillings, including pork and cabbage, shrimp, and vegetables.

For my part of the artwork, I drew a young woman celebrating Chinese New Year. I have modernized her traditional Chinese clothing. Her hair is adorned with beautiful headpieces.

In her hand the young woman holds a candied hawthorn skewer - tang hulu.  The sour hawthorn paired with the sweet and crunchy sugar coating makes it a perfect treat for winter.

Chinese New Year is also known as Luna New Year, and is celebrated with fireworks, exchanging of red envelopes, and ushering in the new Chinese zodiac, which for 2025 is the Snake.
