Sakvan's Snake Animation

My mythical creature is the black snake in Lalish, Iraq.

In Yazidi culture, snakes are considered sacred beings, and the black snake serves as a powerful symbol of protection and bravery. These revered creatures are calm, brave and fast, especially at night.

A statue of the black snake guards the entrance of the Lalish temple in Iraq, the holiest site for Yazidi people. This reverence stems from an ancient tale from the time of Noah’s Ark. According to Yazidi tradition, when water began leaking into the great boat, a black snake coiled itself into the hole, using its body to stop the rushing water and save everyone on the ark.

Ever since, Yazidis have honoured the black snake as a holy guardian.
